FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - The University of Mary Washington is kicking off a campaign to raise $75 million as part of its centennial celebration.
The Fredericksburg school says it has $63.7 million since the "silent phase" of the campaign began in 2000. The funds will go toward attracting and retaining faculty and students, maintaining and adding to the school's infrastructure and daily operations.
Fundraising efforts began in 2000 with a goal of $40 million. That number was raised due to the school's success. The goal is expected to be reached by 2010.
Acting president and UMW Foundation treasurer Rick Hurley says only 27% of its operating budget comes from the state and the number is expected to drop.
